The Rotary Club of Allander was conceived in late 1969 and is the daughter club of Glasgow North and Bishopbriggs. Our inaugural meeting took place in January 1970, quickly followed by our Charter Dinner on 29th May 1970 (charter number 1113). The club was quite different from existing clubs in our District in that we were first to take advantage of a new ruling by R.I. that clubs need no longer have a business only qualification, and that residence in the Club's area was now acceptable. This was a great help in the recruitment of members as so many candidates worked in Glasgow. A good mix of local business and professional people, and others living in our area, but working outwith resulted. The Club's membership has not varied a great deal over the past 30 years, and is usually about the 30-35 number.
Another different feature at the formation of the club was that we met in the evening in the Black Bull Hotel in Milngavie. This was an historic hostelry tracing its origins back to the 18th century when it was a staging post for horse drawn transport.
The Club has, even from its very beginnings, been very active at District level, and already the position of District Governor has been occupied by Allander members on three occasions. - Bill Dudgeon.
